Find why a French form returns an English correction message
The form's heading, labels and help text can all be in French while the message that helps a visitor recover from an error appears in English. Replacing the visible labels will not fix a message supplied by a different part of the application. Follow the unsuccessful attempt to the first point where the intended language is lost.
This fictional investigation uses form F-29. The customer must choose a delivery method before sending an equipment request. The business has approved French and Dutch validation messages. The form deliberately remains incomplete so the team can inspect a correction path without creating a real order or contacting a customer.
Establish the expected correction
For the French fixture, the missing delivery method should produce the approved instruction to choose a method. The visitor's equipment selection and written explanation should remain available. The control must be identifiable so the customer knows what to correct.
The saved business rule is identical in the two language versions. This is not a situation where one audience has different delivery options. The reviewer records that fact before comparing messages; a language comparison should not accidentally turn a genuine business-rule difference into a defect.
The ordinary browser receives a validation response with a stable error key, delivery_method_required. The response does not create a request reference. That absence is expected for this rejected attempt and is not evidence that a successful request disappeared.
Trace language through the correction path
| Stage | French fixture observation | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Page and controls | French labels and selected French route | Initial presentation is correct |
| Validation response | Correct missing-method error key | Business rule identifies the right issue |
| Message lookup | Shared error renderer uses its English default | First observed language disagreement |
| Displayed message | English instruction beside the control | Visible consequence of the lookup |
| Entered values | Equipment and explanation remain | No demonstrated value-loss defect |
The page renderer knows the French locale, but the shared error renderer is called without that context. It selects its default wording even though an approved French entry exists. Translating the default string in place would simply create a new problem for English visitors.
Repair the context rather than the business rule
The correction supplies the active supported locale to the error-message lookup and retains the stable validation key. The business requirement to select a delivery method remains unchanged. The team also defines what the interface should do when an approved translation is unavailable, rather than exposing an internal key as public copy.
In the repeated French fixture, the same incomplete form produces the approved French instruction. The customer can find the relevant control, choose a method and retain the equipment and explanation already entered. A supported isolated submission then reaches the normal stored-receipt state with its own reference.
The Dutch fixture receives its approved Dutch message, and the English fixture retains the English wording. A different French error concerning a missing contact address still names the correct field. These checks prevent a patch that hardcodes one sentence for every validation failure.
Keep the conclusion proportionate to the evidence
The investigation establishes a message-selection defect and a verified correction path. It does not establish an email-delivery failure, an inaccessible database or a payment problem. Those claims would require their own observations. Likewise, a correct French sentence does not by itself prove that the full form works with a keyboard or assistive technology; those interactions remain part of the agreed interface checks.
The final record contains the page locale, error key, old default lookup, corrected lookup and retained-value result. It also names the independent Dutch and English controls. A future maintainer can reproduce the reasoning without relying on a screenshot whose context has been lost.
Forms and intake can cover validation and recovery alongside the successful route. Bring the failed attempt to the first conversation with the exact message, selected language and expected business rule.
